Expatriates to project positive Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged the Bangladesh Diaspora in SA to project positive image and the successes the country achieved during the last three years of present Awami League government changing lives of people qualitatively.

Every sector of the country is progressing fast and our successes have brought qualitative change in the society and economy as well as in improving the standard of living, she said.

The Prime Minister said this while speaking through a video- conference from her Gonobhaban residence this morning with the expatriates on the occasion of 'Samudra Bijoy Utsab' in New York City Sunday night.
PM's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said New York City Awami League (NYAL) unit arranged the programme in celebration of Bangladesh's gain of maritime area in the Bay of Bengal at Queens Palace in New York where mayor of New Jersey were present as the chief guest.
The Prime Minister extended her thanks to the expatriate citizens and exchanged greetings with them.
Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is a very potential country, and whenever Awami League came to power it made relentless efforts to move the country forward utilizing the potentials.
She urged them to work for brightening the image of the country abroad and highlight the country's progress in various sectors over the years.
She also touched upon the country's present political situation and said the present government has taken initiatives to try the war criminals and corrupts to make the country's development and democracy sustainable.
She said in the name of democratic movement, BNP is out to foil the trial of war criminals and corrupts. But, their trial will surely be held even after their repeated attempt to foil it, she asserted.
She referred to deterioration of law and order and torture of BNP- Jamaat activists during their 2001-2006 rule and said they made the country a land of terrorists and militants.
The present government has erased the bad name restoring the image of Bangladesh as a democratic, progressive and secular state side by side the government is making stride for strengthening democracy and economic progress of the country, she said.
Mentioning the intimidation of BNP government on political opponents and minorities she said the global community should know about the torture and political vengeance they meted to the opposition.
The Prime Minister expressed her gratitude to the expatriates for their wholehearted support to her and Awami League at the time of crisis particularly after August 15, 1975 and during the crucial time after January 11, 2007.
She also recalled the contribution of the expatriates in the movement for restoration of democracy in Bangladesh.
She urged the expatriates to remain alert about the propaganda of BNP and Jamaat saying BNP and its allies are now rampaging, destroying public lives and properties across the country.
President of New York unit of AL commander Nurunnabi and general secretary Emdad Chowdhury spoke among others on the occasion.
PM's special assistant Abdus Sobhan Golap and Military Secretary Major General Mia Mohammad Joynul Abedin were present at Gonobhana at that time.
Mayor of New Jersey invited the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit his state in her convenient time.
